chicken vs. chicken

Jack is just at the very beginning of learning to use language.

He can say and identify Dada/Daddy.
Oddly, although he can say "D" for Dada, he calls the dogs, "Oggie."
Twice now he has said "oggie" to dogs that were not ours. (That could just be a fluke thing.)
And, although he rarely does, he can say, "Mama."
And, before you ask, yes, it does annoy the shit out of me that he says oggie more readily than Mama.
Once or twice he has said something approximating "auntie" and "hi."

It is just so terribly exciting to see him start this process and I'm looking forward to the years to come.

I love this video about (primarily) homonyms.*
I think it is a beautiful representation of the ways we use language.
I can't wait to share it with Jack when he gets older.

*A friend of mine tells the story of her elementary school teacher who was asking the class for examples of homonyms. My friend suggested "chicken." The teacher was confused and asked what she meant. She replied, "You know: the chicken that is the animal at the farm and the chicken that we eat for dinner." The teacher kindly explained that it is the same chicken.  That night she told her parents she was becoming a vegetarian.

  1. It annoys you even more how much he says Dada.
